The Elfstedentocht, Dutch for " Eleven cities tour " is a race for people on ice skates. The race takes place on canals in Friesland in the north of the Netherlands. The route of the race goes through eleven towns and is nearly 200 kilometers long.

The Eleven Cities skating Tour is the first and the oldest skating tour passing through eleven historical cities of the Dutch province of Fryslan. The Elfstedentocht is an ice-skating tour that follows a closed or circular route along frozen canals, rivers and lakes visiting the eleven historical Frisian towns of Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker and Dokkum.

For the new Elfstedenhal in the city of Leeuwarden, the artists Blok-Lugthart made a design of large prints on the glass façade of skaters gliding over the clear ice. The fragile surface of the glass facade turns into a large plain of ice on which the skaters pull their tracks.
